MISSION TRIP UPDATES:
FYI: This page will be updated a couple times more with writings from our group journal and pictures.
7/5 Thursday ended with dinner with Lorenzo and Sabrina (the homeowners), Doug and Sarah (our supervisor and his fiancee), Bailey and the rest of us going out to dinner.
Friday we got to Gulf Islands Water Park for its opening and had a fun day of slides and tag in the lazy river. We returned in time for dinner at camp, fireworks and a beach bonfire.
Today we leave hopefully within the hour (it is 6:30 now). We'll give you calls when we've got a better estimate of when we'll arrive. The earliest possible is about 4 p.m. and the latest is hopefully 7 p.m.
7/3 We finished our work today. We've papered most of the roof and rebuilt the beams that needed much more work than we realized to be able to support the whole roof. The largest face is completely finished including repairing around the chimney and shingling. To get all this done we left the camp at 7:30 (an hour and a half before we'd managed to leave any other day).
Here are updates from others, attributed when they signed them in the trip journal.
* early morning. started at 8.
*Built dog house for lorenzo's puppy's and cleaned dog cage thing

* Built Dog house for Lorenzo's Dog. -- Reese
* Built Dog house for Lorenzo and finished one side of roof. -- Cody
* To you all from Trinity Group. You have done great thinkgs while in Mississippi. I think you all are roses. You all will be missed. Peace, Doug (our site supervisor)
*From Butch Jones, Director of MOB: It amazes me that here we are almost 3 years after the storm, and we still have thousands of great folks willing to open their hearts and minds in order to help those that are in need. Your Diocese has gone above and beyond what they have been called to do repeatedly. For that, we thank you. For me, it is a great thing to see the willingness to help in the faces of all of the youth. If they only learn one lesson while they are here, I hope it will be the most important lesson of all. That is whatever it was that inspired and motivated them to get together and build a community in order to help another community is one of the most important lessons in life to remember. Hopefully, they will never lose it because it will take them anywhere in life that they want to go. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
7/2 We continued work on the house today. It was hotter than yesterday so we brought more water and the arrival of the portalet let us take better care of ourselves is consuming water and relieving ourselves. It will be a stretch to finish the roof we're putting up by tomorrow. We think we will finish with the additional help of a carpenter, a construction supervisor, and possibly Lorenzo (the home owner).
We finished work and relaxed as Sonic. Then we went to the firehouse where Lorenzo works and explored the fire truck, an ambulance, a weight room and the Emergency Operations Center.
7/1 WLOX ABC showed us on tonight's news at 5:00 here is a link to the text article. A link to the video is possibly included below. If not, it is titled as below.
Tonight's devotion included being deeply rooted in Jesus so that we can weather the storms of life that face us just as the huge oaks on Christ Church's property weathered Katrina.
7/1 We've entered more into the camp routine with evening 'announcements' including a devotion led by one of the groups. Last night it was about being earthy and not being afraid to get dirty.
We got to the worksite where we'll serve for the rest of the week today. The house is owned by a local firefighter who holds down a number of other jobs as well. He thought it was a prank when Trang Pham-Bui called him from WLOX to get some information from him for a story they aired at 5 this evening on us, the work of the Diocese of Florida and of course his house. We'll be working on finishing the roof for the rest of the week. While it is hot work, we're praying also that the rain stays until we finish the roof.
Taryn and Stephanie did a great deal of work today cleaning up disintegrated shingles from around the home. They likely did more work and certainly much less visible work than the rest of us.
To celebrate the end of a good work day, we all stopped by Sonic for an assortment of cool treats and bought two slip and slides from Wal-Mart to make slip and slide races available to the camp.
6/30 Breakfast was continental and abundant including muffins, cereal, & fruit. After breakfast we had an orientation to the work that Mission on the Bay is doing and the facilities. We're expecting 130 people staying here at Mission on the Bay this week. Each day we're sent all around the area to do work. Trinity's group has been assigned to Camp Coast Care.
Before going to Camp Coast Care we took a moment to do devotions focusing on conduct and living in faith. We talked of finding God in small things as well as of the incredible faith of people who keep seeking God in faith even with the devistation they faced in Hurricane Katrina.
At Camp Coast Care we did yardwork and cleaning indoors. Outdoors we weedwacked, sorted through scrap wood, cleaned milk crates as well as various other tasks. Indoors we cleaned restrooms, a dorm for 100, a lounge, and a common room. A few also cooked lunch and helped Camp Coast Care prepare for more volunteers who are coming soon.
Below are sentences from the youth who were asked to write a sentence about today.
Pressure washing is fun.
Wesley exercise that finger
We cooked a massive lunch and mopped the entire place.
Mopping is very fun!
Cleaning toilets wasn't too fun.
Moving wood is boring.
I can't mop.
Ah, there's something in my eye.
We feel good although many are a little tired still as we adjust to sleeping in the the barracks. We were glad to end our work today earlier than expected (working 9:30-3:00) to give a better chance to rest.
6/29
Our mission team (still waiting for Masey) includes Caroline, Wesley, Taryn, Stephanie, Meredith, Lynn, Darcy, Deb, Jouana, Reese, Dylan, John, Cody, Fr. Brian, and Tony.
We left the church at about 1:30 and arrived about 10:30 central time. The trip was uneventful with the exception of a couple of rain storms that slowed us down. We were welcomed royally and have lodging in two of their barracks (named St. Patrick's and Church of the Redeemer). We'll meet the youth who are here from other churches in the morning along with three more groups that arrive tomorrow. Even those who slept in the cars went quickly to bed anticipating the 6:30 breakfast that will be the start of a day of incredible work and fellowship. The sound of cicadas is notably loud although it is drowned out by the hum of the air-conditioners that keep the barracks cool. Keep checking back here for more updates. Fr. Brian's cell phone (904.687.4264) will also be updated as service permits (Verizon doesn't seem to want to work in the office).
6/21 We're in our last week of preparation before we depart for Mississippi on June 29. Pray for us,
that we're able to show Christ to those we serve and that we grow in Christ. That travel is safe and
God guided. For health going in and stamina to face Mississippi in July. We also ask your prayers for those
who are facing flooding now in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and other natural disasters.
